Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a hearing test that assesses the function of the middle ear by measuring how well the eardrum moves in response to changes in air pressure. It helps identify potential issues within the middle ear space, such as fluid, eardrum perforations, or Eustachian tube dysfunction. The test is non-invasive, painless, and relatively quick, taking only a few minutes to perform.

During tympanometry, a probe is gently inserted into the ear canal. This probe emits a tone and then changes the air pressure within the ear canal. The tympanometer measures how the eardrum moves in response to these pressure changes. The results are displayed on a graph called a tympanogram, which shows the pressure in the ear canal and the compliance (movement) of the eardrum.

Tympanometry is commonly used in children, especially those with suspected ear infections or other middle ear problems. It can also be used in adults to assess middle ear function and diagnose various conditions. The test is generally safe and painless.
